Pierside

In the War of 1812, the United States abandoned large parts of northern Maine to the British. The British invaded from Canada and controlled large parts of Maine for the duration of the war. Since 1905, the U.S. Navy has paid its penance to Maine, sending a capital ship there every year to celebrate Fourth of July. My ship, USS McFAUL (DDG 74), an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer, went in 2007. This photo was taken of our destroyer pierside while getting underway on a private tour of Eastport, Maine's harbor given by the chairman of the Fourth of July host committee. The boat in the foreground is a U.S. Navy security boat.
