The first in a week-long series of images of afternoon light in the National Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City, District, and Diocese of Washington.
When I captured this image, I heard in my head the line from G. K. Chesterton's poem "Lepanto"; And he flings great shadows foe-wards, making cross and castle dark / He has veiled the plumed lions on the galleys of Saint Mark.
Something about the shadow of the cross captured my attention.
